For artist Jess Palu, creativity and spirituality aren’t separate pursuits—they’re interwoven, each one deepening the other. “I feel like my spirituality is the key to what drives me to do all of my artwork,” Jess shares. “It’s what pushed me into art therapy in the first place—it just happened naturally. I was turning to art as a way to heal, and then I realized there were actual techniques that could help me use it more intentionally, both for myself and others.”
Jess’s work often involves deep, sacred moments—particularly when she’s creating commission pieces for families who have lost children or loved ones. Many of these paintings include the Savior alongside those who’ve passed, offering a kind of visual reminder that their presence is still felt and honored as part of the family.
“When I paint those portraits, I’m praying for the families the whole time,” she says. “I ask myself, ‘What would Jesus look like holding this baby? How would He be with this family?’ I have to tap into the spiritual side of me for that—it’s more than just art. It’s worship.”
Around Easter, this takes on even deeper meaning. The themes of comfort, healing, and sacred connection feel especially close to the surface. Jess says, “Using the talents God gave me builds my own spiritual wellness. And when I give those pieces to the families, it feels different—like I’m handing them something that connects heaven and earth for a moment.”
Her biggest tip for spiritual wellness? Vulnerability. “Take the time to pray, to be still, and to connect with something bigger than you. But also—share your story. That act alone can be spiritual. When we share the fragile, sacred pieces of our lives, we realize we’re not alone. We make family out of strangers. That’s where healing begins.”
As we move through the Easter season, Jess reminds us that even the softest act of creation—a brushstroke, a shared story, a quiet prayer—can draw us into the deep, transformative power of faith, love, and connection.
