We all crave a sense of belonging—a place where we feel seen, valued, and understood. But in today’s fast-paced world, that sense of connection can sometimes feel just out of reach. For Kim Davis, an avid quilter, the answer to building a strong sense of community has come through an unexpected yet powerful source: quilting retreats.
Kim recalls the first time she attended a quilting retreat. "For me, that sense of belonging has come through quilting retreats," she shares. "I started quilting five years ago, and while it may sound surprising, this craft has been a transformative experience."
Kim describes quilting retreats as a place to connect with others. "Quilting retreats provide a safe space where laughter, creativity, and emotions are all welcome," she explains. "What happens at a quilting retreat stays there. This openness fosters a deep sense of community." Sharing frustrations and triumphs through quilting strengthens the bonds between participants.
At Mountain Mermade, a retreat where Kim often gathers with fellow quilters, the atmosphere is one of connection and authenticity. "As we quilt, we engage in genuine conversations, laugh together, and find relief from life’s challenges," Kim says. "Instead of feeling weighed down by the burdens of daily life, we leave feeling supported and refreshed. This sense of belonging allows us to be our unique selves, free from judgment."
Balancing Social Interaction and Personal Well-Being
Of course, even in a strong community, balance is key. Kim understands the importance of maintaining social connections while also preserving personal well-being. "While community is essential, I also recognize the importance of alone time," she acknowledges. "Like many of us, my schedule is always on the go, but I prioritize moments for myself. I also carve out time to read, meditate, and pray—practices that help me recharge and stay centered."
She emphasizes that stepping away doesn’t mean disconnecting; instead, it allows her to be fully present when she returns to her quilting circle. "Finding time to be alone, even briefly, allows me to reset without feeling isolated. This balance ensures that my social interactions enhance my well-being rather than drain me."
The Power of Listening in Social Wellness
Beyond the craft itself, Kim believes that one of the most valuable skills in building meaningful connections is the ability to truly listen. "One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in improving social wellness is the power of listening," she reflects. "True listening isn’t just waiting for your turn to respond—it’s about engaging with genuine intent and hearing with your heart."
Whether it’s a heartfelt conversation over a quilting project or a walk with a friend, Kim has found that deep listening creates trust and strengthens relationships. "Face-to-face conversations, walks with a friend, and lighthearted moments all contribute to authentic communication. By focusing on truly listening, we foster deeper connections and nurture our sense of belonging."
At its core, community is about more than just being in the same space as others—it’s about building relationships that uplift and support us. Kim Davis' experience with quilting retreats is one example of how finding a shared space can foster connection. But community can take many forms: whether through creative activities like crafting, fitness classes, volunteering, or even simple moments of conversation, each opportunity allows us to form genuine bonds. No matter the setting, we all have the chance to cultivate a sense of belonging that enriches our lives.
